John Paul mentors photographers, helping them develop their own style and unique view of the world

There is no faster way to come into your own quickly in photography than through the personal mentoring of someone who knows the history of photography, the ins and outs of technique and how one develops their own particular style.

Classical musicians have know this for thousands of years. All great educational institutions pursue this kind of approach, places such as Cambridge, Oxford, Harvard, and Yale. If you truly want to develop as a photographer and come into your own photographically, then you should consider investing in yourself. Find a teacher who can help bring out the best inside of you.

“A mentor is a set of sensitive eyes that sees what the student overlooks in their practice. This “guru/coach” is one that demonstrates an acute sensitivity to the innate abilities of the budding photographer. A mentor offers the right advice and direction that helps the student achieve their greatness. I know of no other way to truly learn about the creative process than through one-on-one mentoring.” – John Paul

About John Paul and Integrative Photography

John Paul studied art in England at West Surrey College of Art & Design as well as Arizona State University.

At A.S.U he was privileged to study under the guidance of art photography historian, Bill Jay. There he had personal access to many of the legends of photography including Eugene Smith, Paul Capinigro, Minor White, and Ansel Adams.

John Paul mentors individual photographers, gives lectures and conducts photographic excursions to remote places around the world. He calls these pilgrimages VisionQuests. The primary focus of his activities is Integrative Photography.

With Integrative Photography the camera is an instrument where one integrates a view of the world that is connected mysteriously from within and outside of oneself. The camera is an integral and essential means for seeing and discovering that world.

What and how a person photographs can offer considerable insight and illumination that, in turn, helps develop both craft and artistic expression. John Paul’s students are encouraged to discover and understand their motivation for taking a picture; why they point the camera and click the shutter, when they do so, and how they process the image later.

Integration occurs whenever motivation for taking a picture and the meaning of the image are connected in a resonant way. Such discovery is not sequentially bound. The answers are sometimes found much later, even after many years. John Paul calls this process Integrative Photography.

What You Should Expect from John Paul as Your Mentor

When you select John Paul as your photographic mentor you will receive training from him in many aspects of the photographic process. First and foremost is a review of your current and past image making and discussions about your images. This happens in the form of critiques. Usually a person publishes their work on the Internet where John Paul can review them prior to the first meeting. This review then forms the basis of the first one hour mentoring session.

In addition to the above review. You will enter into discussions regarding questions and answers you may have about the medium. John Paul will seek to understand where you are at and the directions you might like to go with your work. These discussions will also include technique, history of the medium, and style. John Paul then gives an assignment to the photographer that helps one move forward with image making. That assignment forms the basis of the second mentoring session. Each session thereafter continues with the same process of review, discussion and assignment.

Mentoring usually takes place through the use of telephone, Skype, and the internet in the form of e-mail and site references for the photographer to study or review. Over time, John Paul will call upon his vast knowledge of the medium and its history to guide the student photographer into a better understanding photography as an expressive medium and also helping the student to gain clear grasp of their own style. This eventually leads to superior image making by the student over a period of time.
